2012 Field Trips/Tours

History and Whisky: Stirling Castle and the distillery at Glengoyne.

Friday 12 th October, 13:30:19:30 hours

This tour will leave from Glasgow city centre after the close of the official conference proceedings.  It will start with a coach ride to the ancient town of Stirling, where we will visit the romantically situated Stirling Castle, perched on a crag overlooking the sites of the main battles of the Scottish wars of independence and occupying a key strategic position as the ‘gateway to the highlands’. A guided tour of the castle will cover a thousand years of changing history and architecture, with the newly restored royal apartments providing interesting insights into life in renaissance Scotland.  We will then proceed to Glengoyne distillery, which nestles in a tiny glen at the foot of the Campsie Hills.  Glengoyne has been producing fine malt whiskies since 1833, and there will be ample opportunities to see the production process and taste the results.   The final leg of the tour will bring us through the Blane valley and back to Glasgow, where we will disembark in the city centre in the early evening.
