SITE OVERVIEW
Il Ciocco is situated on two thousand acres of natural park in the Garfagnana Valley.
ON-SITE HOUSING / FACILITIES
Il Ciocco's rooms include telephones (external line), TV's, refrigerator-bars and air-conditioning. Some of the rooms have balconies overlooking the valley.
The hotel has an ATM and also offers a laundry service. Please inquire at the hotel reception for more information.
DINING AREA / MEALS
Meals are served in "La Veranda" restuarant which is located on the ground floor of the hotel next to the bar.
Kosher or Halal meals are not available at Il Ciocco.
INTERNET, PHONE AND COMPUTER ACCESS
Il Ciocco provides computer facilities for attendees (located in room "Guli" upstairs from the auditorium). There are two PCs connected to the Internet and two printers. There are also 12 Ethernet ports available for attendees who bring laptops.
There is wireless available in the hotel lobby auditorium and “Guli” computer room. You have to pay the hotel directly for this service. The cost is €3.00 for half an hour, €5.00 for one hour and €12.00 for 24 hours.
You can make phone calls from your room using a calling card. If you are not using a calling card, hotel call charges can differ dramatically. A good suggestion is to make a short call and check the cost afterwards with the hotel reception. There are also cash phones at the hotel.
ALCOHOL POLICY
The hotel has a bar on the ground floor. After evening meals this is a natural gathering place for the conference and on some evenings there is live music. You may take drinks from this bar outside onto the veranda area. Alcoholic drinks purchased outside of the hotel must not be consumed on the premises. Drinks served at poster sessions must be kept within the poster area and not taken to other parts of the hotel.
HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBILITY
All facilities used are handicapped-accessible.
SITE & AREA RECREATION
The site is isolated and sits on a hill approximately 2km from a main road. There are a couple of hiking trails that lead from the hotel. The grounds of the hotel are vast and can be explored, although some of tracks are on concrete paths. Other local information is available in the Reception Desk at IlCiocco, including road maps of the surrounding area.
There is an open air swimming pool, which opens when the weather is warm enough and it is free for hotel guests. Swimming caps can be purchased at the pool and MUST be worn (this is the law in Italy). Towels are provided.
The hotel has a weight room, a solarium and a sauna. Some treatments are also available. The opening times are usually displayed by the main elevators. The sauna is run by an external company - not the hotel. Please keep in mind the opening hours are often limited and do not always fit in with conference free time.
The hotel also has a number of tennis courts and a limited number of rackets and tennis balls to loan out. The tennis courts are located further uphill from the hotel (approximately 15-20 minutes walking).
The nearest place to visit is Barga, which is a small village approximately 10 minutes drive from Il Ciocco. There are a few shops and bars and it is generally a nice place to walk around and soak up the atmosphere. The old part of the town is worth a visit - you can wander around the small streets and head higher to visit the cathedral and take in the spectacular views. If you do not have a car, the hotel can arrange taxis for you. Please remember that most shops are closed in the afternoon.
Mountain bikes can be hired and horse riding is also available. Please ask for details at the hotel reception.
OTHER INFORMATION
Please note: The hotel does not have any shopping facilities for toiletries, notepads, etc. There are a few small shops at the hotel, including a local produce shop and a jewelry shop. The opening hours of the shops vary. Outside of the hotel, the nearest place to shop is Barga or Gallicano, which are only accessible by car or taxi.
Electrical Adaptors: You should bring your own electrical adaptors with you. There is nowhere to buy adaptors at the site (the nearest place is Barga or Gallicano - and you will need a car to get to either one). Italy uses a Type C (CEE 7/16) two-pronged adaptor where the pins are 4mm in diameter. This adaptor is also called a "Europlug".
Luggage: Luggage can sometimes be delayed because of flight connections to Pisa. It would be advisable to carry some items in your hand luggage to be prepared in case this happens to you. If you do not have a car, it can be a big inconvenience if you need to replace or buy items (due to the location of the hotel). As mentioned above, the small "Bazaar" on site does have a small selection of toiletries.
Animals are not allowed at the site.
