Evolution of Particulate Matter Pool in Brazilian Coastal Waters from MODIS (2002-2022) observation
The Brazilian coastline holds significant ecological, societal, and economic importance, serving as a vital ecosystem. However, it faces considerable vulnerability due to both natural processes and human activities (intensive agriculture, deforestation, urbanization, and dam construction). In this context, the study endeavors to understand the recent evolution of particulate matter pool in Brazilian coastal waters, examining quantitative changes through the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) and Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) concentrations as well as qualitative changes using descriptors such as the POC/SPM ratio. This work will first present innovative SPM and POC multiple inversion algorithms developed for MODIS application in coastal waters and combined based on the use of optical water type classification. The SPM, POC and POC/SPM MODIS (OC-SMART processing) time series have been generated then analyzed based on Census-X-11 time series decomposition method and trend detection techniques. The different coastal “hot spots” identified along the Brazilian coastal waters (including estuaries, bays, and lagoons) showing significant changes in the particulate matter pool composition in response to changes in environmental conditions will be then further documented emphasizing the impact of human pressures on this coastal domain.
