HyperNav’s journey from radiometric characterization to water-leaving radiance measurements for enhanced PACE SVC gains

Satellite ocean color missions require post-launch calibration adjustments known as system vicarious calibration (SVC). The HyperNav system was developed to expedite the SVC process of the Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) carried by the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, Ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite by augmenting the number of high-quality in-situ measurements across multiple sites (e.g., Hawaii, Crete, Puerto Rico). The HyperNav comprises two independent hyperspectral upward radiance (Lu) sensors affixed to an autonomous float. We outline the processing steps applied to the in-situ measured Lu spectra from HyperNav to derive water leaving radiance (Lw): (1) applying calibration and computing uncertainties associated with instrument characterization; (2) propagating the Lu measurements from 10 cm deep to above the surface; (3) reconciling the independent Lw measurements from the two radiometric sensors to improve estimated Lw and further confine uncertainties; and (4) performing quality control (e.g. self-shading, tilt). These steps ensure that HyperNav Lw data meet stringent in-situ criteria for inclusion in the SVC process. The resulting high resolution, high accuracy, and low uncertainty Lw measurements are directly employed to estimate the SVC gains of OCI. We present initial results from the HyperNav data processing stream collected since early 2024 from various deployment locations.
