ABSTRACT 875 | POSTER W-019

OLCI SENTINEL-3 AS A MONITORING TOOL FOR HIGHLY COMPLEX WATERS IN BRAZIL’S SOUTHERN COAST

The last decades are marked by significant advancements in remote sensing technology, for both continental and marine usages. One of the main advances in ocean remote sensing technology was the launch of Sentinel-3 satellites, with higher spatial and spectral resolution, making it a valuable tool for monitoring coastal regions. The present work aims to analyze the time-series of chlorophyll-a concentration (Chla), suspended material (TSM), dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and temperature using Sentinel-3 products along the southern coast of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), providing a framework for monitoring operational tools. Sentinel-3 data was downloaded in batch from EUMETSAT, and the performance of the current implemented algorithms were tested using in-situ data prior to the temporal analysis. Preliminary results showed that regional bio-optical algorithms, such as the OC2LPv2, improved the chlorophyll-a retrievals when applied to Level-2 reflectance data (Baseline Atmospheric Correction), and the comparison of Chla data against the neural network product (C2RCC) is under investigation. TSM and CDOM data were also sampled to evaluate the operational C2RCC products. Temperature data from SLSTR are under evaluation against in situ sensors available in local monitoring (SiMCosta program). The study area exhibits high spatiotemporal dynamics due to the presence of Patos lagoon estuary and the influence of La Plata River plume in the coastal region, where Sentinel-3 resolution will be of great value. The work provides a broad database of oceanographic variables in higher resolution than is already available in other worldwide databases, providing crucial data for environmental and ecological applications.
