ABSTRACT 933 | POSTER TH-080

DEVELOPMENT OF A COST-EFFECTIVE LASER INDUCED FLUORESCENCE (LIF) LIDAR FOR CDOM AND CHL-A DETECTION

A new Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) sensor, tailored for oceanographic applications, is being developed with limited costs in the frame of Horizon 2020 NAUTILOS project. NAUTILOS (New Approach to Underwater Technologies for Innovative, Low-cost Ocean observation) aims to fill in existing marine observation and modeling gaps through the development of a new generation of cost-effective sensors and samplers for physical, chemical, and biological essential ocean variables, in addition to micro-/nano-plastics, to improve our understanding of environmental change and anthropogenic impacts related to aquaculture, fisheries, and marine litter. LIF sensors exploit fluorescence phenomenon, wherein compounds emit light across a broad wavelength range upon UV-VIS light excitation. This technology is particularly valuable for detecting specific marine compounds like Chlorophyll-a and CDOM. NAUTILOS’ compact and cost-effective LIF LIDAR sensor is specifically designed for autonomous deployment above water, with optics optimized for detection at 5 meters depth. The LIF LIDAR has been tested installed onboard an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) in Norway and its measurements were cross-referenced with in situ fluorometers.
