SATELLITE LIDAR DERIVED BACKSCATTERING COEFFICIENT (BBP) PRODUCT VALIDATION WITH SHIP-BORNE AND BGC- ARGO IN SITU MEASUREMENTS
Satellite-based Ocean color observations are vital for studying marine ecosystems. The CALIOP sensor on the CALIPSO satellite offers enhanced capabilities, especially in polar, and subpolar regions, in the dark and while cloudy. Originally designed for atmospheric aerosols, it is recently utilized to derive the particulate backscattering coefficient (bbp) in the ocean. However, validating this application has been challenging due to insufficient data matchups and the absence of a universally accepted validation protocol. The CALIOP sensor’s bbp product from 2006 to 2021 was evaluated, using data from PACE, OC-CCI v3, and various other expeditions. A standardized validation framework with a 24-hour 15-kilometer spatio-temporal window was applied, identifying several matchup pairs between CALIOP and in situ observations. The analysis with in situ data showed a strong correlation (R² = 0.78, MRE = 45.72%) until 2017, but a significant performance decline (R² = 0.03, MRE = 66.55%) was observed when adding data up to 2021. BGC-ARGO data showed a moderate correlation (R² = 0.61, MRE = 42.01%) until 2017, but a weak correlation (R² = 0.01, MRE = 72.40%) after 2017, possibly due to the sensor’s laser weakening. Despite being an atmospheric aerosol sensor, CALIOP performed well in estimating the oceanic backscattering coefficient. However, its vertical resolution is too coarse for observing ocean profiles. The study highlights the potential of lidar satellite sensing for oceanic observational studies and the importance of dedicated lidar satellite sensors for oceanic applications.
