A multi-sensor approach to retrieve terrestrial and aquatic typologies in transitional environment: the wetland forest in Cần Giờ (Vietnam)

The improvement of the knowledge of relationships between terrestrial and aquatic typologies has a fundamental role for flood risk regulation in transitional environments providing important information to monitor highly dynamic and vulnerable system, especially in land-ocean coastal zones. Here, a multi-sensor approach is used to retrieve the fractional cover composition of the emerged/submerged vegetation, substrates, and water in a muddy tropical delta in Southeast Vietnam: tidal/coastal wetland forest in Cần Giờ (World’s Biosphere Reserve). In this perspective, we explore the potential indicators for different components of the land and water spheres based on a multi-sensor approach using new earth observation missions to consolidate classification algorithms in transitional environments. The Cần Giờ area has been created by a dense channel network that relates the landward and the seaward habitats. The available data from the hyperspectral PRISMA satellite sensor are integrated with other source of information in synergy with products from ASI, ESA and NASA satellites to map different terrestrial and aquatic typologies distributed in the intertidal region over time, and to obtain information on their biogeophysical and morphological attributes. Spectral Mixture Analysis (SMA) and BOMBER (Bio-Optical Model Based tool for Estimating water quality and bottom properties from Remote sensing images) techniques are used to consolidate classification algorithms for detailed identification of the terrestrial and aquatic optical properties respectively. Results from earth observation data demonstrate the ability of hyperspectral sensors to map at finer resolution the different components also into the aquatic domain.
