ABSTRACT 793 | POSTER T-120

ESTIMATING THE SUSPENDED PARTICULATE MATTER BUDGET OF PATOS LAGOON

Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) dominates the composition of coastal waters and its transport can be unraveled with ocean color observations and algorithms. The Patos Lagoon (Brazil) is the world’s largest choked coastal lagoon and, although previous studies have investigated the SPM fluxes in the region, none of them estimated the Patos Lagoon SPM budget. This study addresses a critical knowledge gap by leveraging a new ocean color product of spatially and temporally resolved estimates of the SPM budget within Patos Lagoon. A scheme is proposed combining Landsat-8/OLI, Landsat-9/OLI-2, Sentinel-2/MSI, and Sentinel-3/OLCI (hereon L8, L9, S2, and S3). The higher spatial resolution from L8, L9, and S2 is needed in narrow regions, while S3 is used to fill temporal gaps. We employed ACOLITE for atmospheric correction and then empirically calibrated the Nechad et al. (2010) model to derive SPM. A bias correction method was applied using S3 as a reference to reduce the systematic bias between the satellites. The fluxes of SPM entering the system by the rivers and latterly transported to adjacent coastal waters through the inlet are calculated by the product between the gauged discharge and the satellite-derived SPM near these stations (or near the river mouth, for S3). The fraction of SPM that remained within the system is given by the difference between the SPM input and output. These steps provide time series, that are analyzed using the Lomb-Scargle periodogram. The methodology is still being refined and we are working on improving the results.
