Tour 1: Arehucas Rum Distillery

The Arehucas Rum Distillery, founded in the late 19th century, is one of the oldest in Europe. This 50-minute tour will lead visitors through the aging cellar, the distillation rooms, and the bottling plant. Guides will explain the rum-making process, and tastings of various rums and liqueurs will be provided.

After the tour, participants will have time to visit other sites in the town of Arehucas on their own, such as the Church of San Juan Bautista, Jardines de la Marquesa, or local cafes.

Cost: 25 Euro/25 USD — Includes transportation and rum distillery tour fee.

Tour 2: Spanish Bank of Algae and Canarian Science and Technology Park

The Spanish Bank of Algae (BEA) is a research center of the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, managed by the Canarian Science and Technology Park Foundation.

BEA is the official Spanish mBRC where algae strains from tropical and subtropical regions, particularly from the Macaronesian region, are maintained. BEA staff will guide participants in viewing the collection of >2000 clonal strains, as well as the tour outdoor facility. BEA’s basic activities include bioprospection, isolation, characterization, conservation, supply, and development of cultivation techniques and applications of algae from a scientific-technological point of view.

Visitors will then take a virtual reality tour of PLOCAN, the oceanographic platform of the Canary Islands, and learn about it’s unique capabilities in building, equipping and operating marine infrastructure for marine research and technology development. PLOCAN provides an array of oceanographic services; experimental platform for sensors, oceanographic observatory and data hub for oceanographic operations. It also hosts a large fleet of underwater vehicles available for scientific research.

Cost: 30 Euro / 30 USD – Includes transportation and picnic lunch.
