Radiometric field inter-comparison of fiducial reference measurements using an open source community processor

A radiometric field intercomparison was conducted at the Acqua Alta Oceanographic Tower in the northern Adriatic Sea from 11 to 21 July 2022, to assess differences in the accuracy of in- and above-water radiometer systems. Absolute radiometric calibration of all sensors was conducted using the same standards and methods at a dedicated laboratory. Measurements from five above-water systems; (Sea-Bird HyperSAS and pySAS, 2 TriOS-RAMSES, SeaPRiSM), one in-water Sea-Bird HyperPro II and a floating RAMSES system were made under clear sky conditions, high sun altitude and moderately low sea state. Data from the above-water Sea-Bird and TriOS systems were processed using the open-source community processor (HyperCP) with standardized settings. The output was compared to the mean of the Sea-Bird and TriOS above-water systems and to SeaPRiSM, HyperPro II and to the floating RAMSES system as an independent reference. For HyperCP class-based processing, there was generally a 1% difference to the mean for Ed(λ), Lsky(λ), Lt(λ), and 5% for Rrs(λ) and the uncertainties were ~4.5%, 3%, 3% and <7%, respectively. For the HyperCP sensor-specific processing the differences in Ed(λ), Lsky(λ), Lt(λ) were 2% and 2.5% for Rrs(λ). The sensor-specific uncertainties were lower than the class-based and were 1.5%, 2%, 1.5% and 5%, respectively. For class-based versus sensor-specific processing of Ed(λ), Lsky(λ), Lt(λ), and Rrs(λ) the differences were typically <5%. Processing data with the HyperCP using sensor-specific characteristics is highly recommended to reduce the associated uncertainties, ensure processing to standard community practice consensus, and to produce the highest quality data.
