Processing of meter- to kilometer-scale, multi- and hyperspectral satellite imagery with ACOLITE

In this presentation updates to ACOLITE from the last few years are presented. The current more generic version of ACOLITE supports processing of many optical satellite-borne sensors using the Dark Spectrum Fitting (DSF) algorithm. The DSF is a generalization of the NIR or SWIR dark pixel atmospheric correction, and retrieves the aerosol optical depth from any band and target combination giving the lowest value, in effect avoiding negative reflectances. The DSF is generally applied with a spatially fixed aerosol optical thickness, but for larger regions of interest tiled and resolved processing options are available. Thermal band processing is supported using the Thermal Atmospheric Correction Tool (TACT) but will not be further discussed in this presentation. The DSF is well adapted for processing of imagery of turbid coastal waters (e.g. water-leaving radiance reflectance > 0.03, Remote sensing reflectance > 0.01) and inland waters. Results are presented from moderate resolution ocean color sensors such as OLCI and VIIRS, as well as hyperspectral sensors, including PACE, and meter-scale near-daily imagery from Planet’s eight band SuperDove constellation. Reflectance outputs are validated using autonomous in situ hyperspectral measurements from the HYPERNETS network, that allow convolution to specific sensor spectral response functions, avoiding band shifting uncertainties. Updates to meter- and decameter sensor processing, including adjacency effect correction, new products using VIIRS I bands (375 m), and chlorophyll a retrieval using SuperDove’s red and red-edge bands are discussed.
