Spatio-temporal variability of OLCI-derived suspended particulate matter in European coastal waters
Remote sensing of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) is crucial for water-quality monitoring, as it influences turbidity, light availability, or nutrient transports. This study aims at providing a comprehensive assessment of the spatio-temporal patterns of SPM over the whole European coastal waters from 2016 to 2024, using the Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) Copernicus L3 Remote Sensing Reflectance (Rrs) product. The semi-analytical algorithm of Han et al. (2016) was applied to the OLCI Rrs to estimate SPM concentrations. The generated product was validated through a matchup exercise with OLCI over the contrasted French coastal waters (n = 150, Bias = 62%, Error = 140%, Slope = 0.76). The SPM product time series was analyzed using a decomposition method, the Census X-11, which provides three terms: seasonal variability, the long-term trend and the sub-annual variability. Maps of each contribution will be presented, as well as the monotonic significant trend map, allowing one to detect hot spots showing high positive or negative changes. Finally, we investigated the relationship between climate variables (wind, waves, SST, precipitations) and the observed trends for SPM.
