ABSTRACT 847 | POSTER W-001

IMPACT ANALYSIS OF ABSORBING AEROSOLS ON THE DIURNAL STABILITY OF ATMOSPHERIC CORRECTION

The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager series (i.e., GOCI and GOCI-II) has offered the regional synoptic view of coastal and open ocean phenomena in the Northeast Asia Seas, making history as the first space-borne ocean color sensor to take daytime images with unprecedented temporal resolution. Therefore, diurnal stability of the atmospheric correction is required over a wide range of sun angles to see small hourly variations in the ocean environment. From experiences of GOCI series operation, absorbing aerosols has caused significant underestimations in remote-sensing reflectance in blue wavelengths for high solar zenith angles. The actual single-scattering albedo observed by the AERONET-OC in the GOCI observation area range around 0.86 to 0.99, although the candidate aerosol models’ single-scattering albedo used in the atmospheric correction process range around 0.96 to 1.0. In this study, we analyze the impact of absorbing aerosols on the diurnal stability of atmospheric correction for the GOCI series and then suggest a preliminary correction model.
