HYPERSPECTRAL RADIOMETRY ON BGC-ARGO FLOATS: FIRST STEPS AND CHALLENGES TOWARDS AN FRM STATUS

The BioGeoChemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) program is progressively implementing a global network of profiling floats carrying biogeochemical and bio-optical sensors, including the measurements of downwelling irradiance (Ed) at four bands. Since 2022 and in the context of the ERC-REFINE project, a new generation of these floats has enabled the integration of amended hyperspectral TriOS-RAMSES radiometers to measure profiles of both Ed and upwelling radiance (Lu). Fourteen of these floats are now operational providing profiles and surface data in real time for 7 different open ocean regions representative of the bio-optical diversity of the ocean. Originally set on a conventional 10-days Argo resolution, measurements are acquired every 5 days since mid-March to increase the probability of match-up during the first phase of PACE acquisition. This study provides an evaluation of the potential of BGC-Argo floats to complement Fiducial Reference Measurement (FRM) standards for ocean color radiometry satellite validation. To achieve this, we focus on assessing the different methods to determine hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance from BGC-Argo floats data. In particular, we present the current work on TriOS-RAMSES characterization and platform-specific uncertainties (calibration, light extrapolation, dark offset, temperature dependency, tilt, self-shading, etc.). We finally provide a SWOT analysis and indications of gaps that need to be filled to raise the array of BGC-Argo floats measuring hyperspectral reflectance to a fleet of FRM platforms.
