ABSTRACT 907 | POSTER W-007

UNIQUE HYPERSPECTRAL SIGNATURES OF DIATOMS

Several species of ecologically significant and distinct nano and microdiatoms, native to the California Current, were grown in culture for hyperspectral bio-optical analysis. These diatoms, including one from the harmful algal bloom genera, Pseudo-nitzschia, exhibit diverse form and function and have unique frustules and intracellular structures. We conducted bio-optical measurements of these cultures including particulate hyperspectral absorption, attenuation, scattering, and backscattering using Seabird ac-s, Eco Triplet, and Sequoia Hyper-bb sensors. Derivative and stepwise discriminant analyzes were used to differentiate between the spectral signatures of these species. Inherent optical properties were assessed over diel cycles to determine relationships to physiological changes and to understand how photoacclimation may affect errors and uncertainties associated with taxa-specific spectral signatures. These errors and uncertainties associated with taxonomic differentiation from in situ optical measurements provide insights for addressing similar challenges when using PACE mission observations.
