POTENTIAL OCEAN REMOTE SENSING CAPABILITIES OF THE FUTURE CALIGOLA SPACEBORNE LIDAR

CALIGOLA (Cloud Aerosol LIdar for Global scale Observation of the ocean-Land-Atmosphere system) is a lidar mission led by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), with an expected launch in 2031. CALIGOLA will improve understanding of the processes that influence climate, weather, and air quality by vertically profiling the microphysical and optical properties of clouds and aerosols. The mission also aims to study phytoplankton biomass and zooplankton dynamics and to provide observations of surface vegetation, ice, and snow. The lidar consists of a three-wavelength laser (355 nm, 532 nm, 1064 nm), with up to 8 receiving channels, providing high-SNR backscatter lidar observations and first-ever measurements of laser-induced Raman scattering and fluorescence from space. Here, we present estimated performance of these potential CDOM fluorescence and phytoplankton PSII fluorescence measurement capabilities, and subsurface profiles of the elastic scatter at 355 nm and 532 nm, showing retrieval uncertainties on night and day sides of the orbit, and potential ocean science applications that can be addressed with this first of a kind space lidar.
