ESTIMATING PAR AT THE OCEAN SURFACE AROUND KOREAN PENINSULA WITH GOCI SERIES
Photosynthesis available radiation (PAR) plays a key role for estimating primary production at the ocean. GOCI-I and GOCI-II were world’s first geostationary ocean color satellite sensor series and they observe ocean around Korean Peninsula successfully. However, there have not been official PAR products from GOCI-I or GOCI-II. Here, we developed PAR algorithm for GOCI-I and GOCI-II. Then, evaluation of daily PAR data from GOCI-I and GOCI-II was carried out with in-situ measurement data and each sensor. Daily PAR from GOCI-I showed under 5% of root-means-square error (RMSE) and under -1% of mean-bias error (MBE) in terms of the comparisons with in-situ measurement daily PAR. Daily PAR from GOCI-II showed under 5% of bias when compared to GOCI daily PAR which had been collected at the same dates with GOCI-II. Generally, GOCI-II daily PAR showed underestimated values compared to GOCI-I. Histogram from each sensor showed similar shapes and range of PAR values but location of peak was different. Daily PAR from GOCI series were integrated from instantaneous PAR data. Therefore, GOCI and GOCI-II PAR data are expected to be helpful in understanding not only daily but also on hourly primary production in the ocean around the Korean Peninsula. In the future study, applications like primary production using GOCI-II PAR data will be carried out.
