ABSTRACT 755 | POSTER W-119
MARITIME AEROSOL NETWORK AS A COMPONENT OF AERONET – A VALIDATION TOOL FOR PACE
Maritime Aerosol Network (MAN) as a component of AERONET collects aerosol optical depth data over World Ocean from ships of opportunity. Establishment of Maritime Aerosol Network allowed to improve our knowledge of aerosol optical properties and fill existing data gaps in various oceanic areas. MAN deploys a hand-held sunphotometer (Microtops II). MAN is affiliated with the AERONET calibration and data processing standards and procedures. Data collection over World Oceans, spanning now for over 18 years put together a public web-based archive which currently consists of over 700 cruises and more than 10000 measurement days. The major advantage of our activity is the fact that hand-held sunphotometer calibration and processing are tied to the AERONET standard. The ship-borne aerosol optical depth data offer an excellent opportunity for comparison with global aerosol transport models and satellite retrievals and provide useful information on aerosol distribution over the oceans. Data archives can help understanding discrepancies between measurements and/or simulations for various areas of the World Ocean. The program exemplifies mutually beneficial international, multi-agency effort in atmospheric aerosol optical studies.
