ABSTRACT 934 | POSTER TH-022

MEASURING PARTICLES AND IOPS IN THE NW LEVANTINE BASIN

The North-West Levantine Basin has been characterized as an ultra-oligotrophic marine environment. Thus, measurements of inherent optical properties (IOPs) and particles are very challenging. Therefore, in order to collect good quality data, it is necessary to follow strict protocols in the field and carefully examine data at all methodological steps during post-processing. In May 2022, an oceanographic cruise with a primary focus on marine optics took place in the Cretan Sea and North-West Levantine Basin. This cruise was designed and funded by HCMR and JRC. During this cruise, radiometric quantities, IOP data, and data from a holographic camera were collected. On the HCMR optics suite, the following instruments were installed: LISST-Deep (Type B), LISST-Holo2, ECOBB3B, AC-s, and Trios Ramses radiometers. The downcast was performed in the euphotic zone at a very slow velocity (~0.2 m/s) and in all stations we attempted to avoid vessel shadow. Data were collected from 30 stations during this cruise. The simultaneous downcast of both LISST-Deep and LISST-Holo2 provides the opportunity to examine particle size, volume concentration, and Particle Size Distribution slope (ξ) for the entire range of both instruments. LISST-Deep measures particles from 1.25 μm to 250 μm, while LISST-Holo2 measures particles from ~25 μm to 2500 μm. We will present estimations of these parameters for the entire range by merging the results. Moreover, a brief overview of IOP profiles will be presented to better understand the optical characteristics of the study area.
