ABSTRACT 878 | POSTER TH-108

SPECTRAL MEASUREMENTS OF PARTICULATE VOLUME SCATTERING AT A BACKWARD ANGLE OF NATURAL WATERS FROM THE BALTIC SEA

A laboratory instrument was developed that is able to measure the volume scattering coefficient at an angle of about 120° in the spectral range of 300 – 850 nm and with a spectral resolution of 1-2 nm. The instrument was used onboard a research vessel during a cruise in July 2023 covering large parts of the Baltic Sea. Measurements of the volume scattering function are shown together with the other IOPs of the sample (absorption and total scattering). For some station measurements were conducted additionally after size fractionation. To our knowledge these are the first measurement of backscattering of natural waters with such a high spectral resolution. The results are discussed in terms of what size and type of particulate material is responsible for backscattering in the Baltic Sea.
