EXPLORING WATER QUALITY DYNAMICS IN THE PO RIVER DELTA THROUGH MULTISOURCE OPTICAL SENSORS

Earth observation has been widely used for tracking river plumes and describing the dynamics of suspended sediment transport in coastal areas. Suspended sediment patterns and their distribution vary intra and interannually and are influenced by various factors as hydro-meteorological forcings, river discharge, coastal currents and delta morphology. While the monitoring of European coastal regions is now performed by the Copernicus Marine Service with high-resolution ocean color products, river deltas and transitional aquatic areas remain uncovered, limiting the understanding of river processes and connectivity between terrestrial inputs and marine waters. In this study, we present the results of the activity carried out in the framework of the ITINERIS Project where the time series analysis of water turbidity, water temperature and normalized difference chlorophyll index maps are derived from multispectral satellite sensors (Copernicus Sentinel-2 and NASA Landsat 8/9) for the terminal stretch of the Po River in Italy from 2017 to 2023. We observed extreme events such as river floods and droughts and their impacts on the delta and coastal environment. Additionally, data from PRISMA hyperspectral sensor were used to assess the potential of spaceborne imaging spectroscopy in addressing environmental challenges, particularly in monitoring inland water ecosystems. From summer 2024, high frequency radiometric measurements are going to be acquired at a fixed station allowing the estimation of the daily variability of water quality parameters as a function of river flow and tidal current.
