LOW-COST SPECTROPOLARIMETRY FOR THE AQUATIC SCIENCES
Over the last decades, in situ hyperspectral radiometry has substantially contributed to validation of satellite imagery and development of optical water quality algorithms exploiting spectral features that are still poorly resolved by multispectral satellites. There are, however, large geographic data gaps in public records of hyperspectral aquatic reflectance, resulting in poor insight into product uncertainty, particularly in optically complex waters, at the global scale. iSPEX 2 is a low-cost device designed to be used with smartphones and operated by non-expert users. Using a stack of grating, retarder and polarization optical foils it projects incoming light onto the phone camera, turning this into a hyperspectral detector. Given the widespread use of smartphones, iSPEX is poised to provide breakthrough capability in air and water quality observation to fill global data gaps, educational use, and early warning of environmental issues. Using polarization modulation optics, atmospheric composition can be recorded alongside reflectance. This capability ties in with the recently launched PACE mission, carrying the SpexOne Polarimeter which shares some design properties with iSPEX. The hyperspectral nature of the aquatic reflectance observations will allow detection of diagnostic pigments in water, but also requires re-thinking algorithm development in the wavelength domain of the phone camera (approx. 400-680 nm).Following several years of product development we have entered the next phase of scientific validation and application development. We will share results on instrument (incl. phone camera) calibration, signal-to-noise performance, spectral resolution, and reproducibility. Opportunities for the wider community to participate in global-scale validation will also be presented.
