VARIABILITY OF DOM OPTICAL PROPERTIES IN WATERS OF KONGSFJORDEN, ISFJORDEN AND HORNSUND (SVALBARD) – DOMINEA PROJECT

We investigated the variability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) optical properties in waters three western fjords of Spitsbergen (Horsund, Kongsfjorden and Isfjorden) during the summers of 2022 and 2023. Water samples were collected to determine the DOM absorption coefficient and fluorescence. The inherent optical properties were measured using the Integrated Optical-Hydrological Probe. Employing excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra and Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC), a model was developed revealing significant differences in the quantitative and qualitative properties of DOM optical characteristics across the fjords. The study found that the composition of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM)was predominantly protein-like fluorophores, with a notable dominance of tryptophan–like fluorescence intensity. Particularly in Hornsund, high Ip values may be attributed to glacier melt water discharge or local autochthonous production, a hypothesis supported by vertical profiles of the agp(676).This findings suggest that a range of local and mesoscale processes could impact DOM composition in these areas. The DOMinEA project aims to investigate these DOM optical properties in the West Spitsbergen Fjords in greater details.
