ABSTRACT 764 | POSTER T-018
DIURNAL VARIABILITY ASSESSMENT OF CHLOROPHYLL-A CONCENTRATIONS USING HIMAWARI-8/AHI
As the global climate continues to evolve, gaining insights into the diurnal dynamics of key oceanic constituents becomes imperative for comprehending the intricate interactions within aquatic ecosystems. Chlorophyll-a, an essential component of primary producers like phytoplankton, holds significant importance in this context. Understanding the diurnal variability of chlorophyll-a concentrations is crucial for informed decision-making in environmental management, as it directly impacts ecosystem health and productivity. However, monitoring these diurnal processes in the oceans faces challenges due to limitations in existing satellite technology. Polar-orbiting systems, such as Sentinel-3/OLCI and MODIS, offer low temporal resolution, limiting our ability to capture the dynamic nature of chlorophyll-a concentrations. Old generation geostationary satellites like Meteosat Second Generation lack bands necessary for comprehensive observations. Additionally, cloudiness, sun glint, and the limited coverage provided by polar observations hinder our understanding of ocean color dynamics. To bridge these gaps, our research leverages the capabilities of new geostationary imagers, with a specific focus on the preliminary analysis of Himawari-8 satellite data. Utilizing its high temporal resolution, frequent revisit times, and adequate bands, we are investigating the diurnal variability from data of chlorophyll products. This will help to evaluate the capability of geo-sensor to actually detect chlorophyll variation during the day. Through visual representations and statistical summaries, our poster presentation aims to contribute to the broader understanding of the diurnal dynamics of chlorophyll-a concentrations data. By analyzing these diurnal patterns, we seek to provide insights into the diurnal variability and contribute to the advancement of oceanic research.
