MULTI-DECADAL CDOM/DOC DYNAMICS IN A DELTAIC COASTAL SYSTEM IN THE NORTHERN GULF OF MEXICO FROM FIELD AND MODIS OBSERVATIONS

Large river-dominated deltaic systems such as the Mississippi River coastal region in the northern Gulf of Mexico are important transition zones between the terrigenous and marine environments with elevated levels of both particulate and dissolved organic matter that influence coastal biogeochemical processes and contribute significantly to the global carbon cycle. In this study, we first present results of a synthesis study of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) measurements obtained from numerous field campaigns conducted in the river-influenced region of the northern Gulf of Mexico during the period encompassing the nearly 20 years of MODIS satellite observation record. We will then use the field observations in combination with an adaptive quasi-analytic algorithm (QAA-AD) and empirical relationships to obtain an optimized algorithm to derive CDOM and DOC from MODIS Aqua data. Further, long-term MODIS-derived CDOM and DOC imagery will be processed and analyzed to understand patterns and spatiotemporal connections to environmental drivers such as river discharge, floods and other climate-related perturbations.
