ABSTRACT 822 | POSTER T-036

OPTICAL CLOSURE BETWEEN HYPER-SPECTRAL APPARENT AND INHERENT PROPERTIES OF EUROPEAN COASTAL WATERS BASED ON HYPERNETS AND HYPERBOOST FIELD MEASUREMENTS

In 2023 and 2024, the biogeochemical and optical properties of European coastal waters have been extensively measured along land-sea interfaces from the Tara sailing research vessel (a) and from autonomous field platforms. These sampling acquisitions were supported by European projects such as Tara Europa and HyperBOOST (b) (Hyperspectral Bio-Optical Observations Sailing on Tara) and HYPERNETS (c) (A new hyperspectral radiometer integrated in automated networks of water and land bidirectional reflectance measurements for satellite validation). The data first allowed to validate the water reflectance retrieved from multi-sensor satellite data (Doxaran et al. 2024) (d). It is here used to calibrate ocean color inversion algorithms used to derive concentrations of algal and non-algal suspended particulate matter (SPM). The wide ranges of biogeochemical and optical properties representative of the diversity of European coastal waters are first documented, such as the SPM mass-specific light absorption and backscattering coefficients, and compared to those previous reported in the CoastLooc dataset (e). An optical closure exercise is then conducted to reproduce the hyper-spectral water reflectance using the measured inherent optical properties. The results obtained highlight the potential but also limits of hyper-spectral reflectance measurements for accurate retrieval of key optical and biogeochemical properties in complex coastal waters.
