APPLICATION OF THE QUALITY ASSURANCE SYSTEM FOR GOCI-II ATMOSPHERIC CORRECTION ALGORITHM AND ITS PRELIMINARY RESULTS
In ocean color remote sensing, Remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs) is the most fundamental for estimating various ocean bio-optical products. However, Rrs exhibits high sensitivity to errors during the atmospheric correction process from the Top-Of-Atmosphere (TOA) radiance. In this study, the Rrs Quality Assurance System (QAS) developed by Wei et al. (2016) is applied to Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II) data. The QAS provides quality analysis scores for Rrs ranging from 0 to 1 and also classifies 23 water types. A higher QA Score, closer to 1, indicates higher reliability of Rrs, while Water Type (WT) classification, closer to 23.We analyze the quality score of Rrs, and then the scores are compared with and without the atmospheric correction update. GOCI-II observes the Korean Peninsula 10 times a day, allowing for analysis of diurnal and seasonal variability. Daytime QA score analysis shows temporal variability, with higher scores at 03 UTC and decreasing scores toward high solar zenith angles. This corresponds to the accuracy of atmospheric correction, which is related to solar elevation angles. For water turbidity, spatial variability was observed depending on the season. The main emphasis of this study is that the GOCI-II atmospheric correction is improved compared to the initial phase results in terms of the QA score. We anticipate this will contribute to the future enhancement of the quality of GOCI-II ocean color products.
