ABSTRACT 904 | POSTER TH-016

ASSESSMENT OF PRISMA WATER REFLECTANCE FOR THE INTEGRATION WITH BIOGEOCHEMICAL MODELS

Spaceborne imaging spectrometry provides measurements across numerous discrete narrow bands, forming a contiguous spectrum that enables the detection and identification of key biophysical properties of optically complex waters. The availability of the full electromagnetic spectrum, from the visible through near-infrared, has led to the derivation of new products and applications in aquatic ecosystems, such as the characterization of phytoplankton, CDOM, suspended particles, and other optically active biological constituents. The integration of hyperspectral imagery and biogeochemical models by means of novel assimilation techniques is a challenging application for improving model parameters and simulating the interaction of optical active constituents with the spectral light field along the water column. A prerequisite for successful data assimilation is an accurate estimation of uncertainties in the satellite observations. In the framework of the HE-NECCTON project, we present the assessment of water reflectance derived from PRISMA hyperspectral sensor in selected sites, that will be used for biogeochemical model validation and data assimilation. In situ reflectance from autonomous hyper- and multispectral radiometer systems are used to evaluate PRISMA Level 2 products distributed by the Italian Space Agency and data derived from the atmospheric correction tool ACOLITE, adapted for processing PRISMA Level 1 products. In total, 69 cloud-free images over two sites in the Black Sea and two sites in the Mediterranean Sea are available for the match-up analysis, covering a period of three years. A preliminary test on novel biogeochemical model, based on hyperspectral bio-optical modeling, is performed for the AAOT site in the Adriatic Sea.
