ABSTRACT 809 | POSTER T-022

VALIDATION OF GAP-FILLED SATELLITE-DETECTED SURFACE CHLOROPHYLL A CONCENTRATION

Satellite remote sensing of optical water properties is prone to frequent gaps, which diminish the usefulness of the dataset. To deal with the missing data, various reconstructive methods have been developed, with DINEOF being the most popular one. Validation of DINEOF’s results has mostly been done by means of cross-validation and comparison with artificially masked data. This work analyzes the validity of reconstruction using DINEOF when used to obtain gap-free chlorophyll a concentration (chl a) from the Adriatic and Ionian Seas from multiple approaches. Daily reflectance data was obtained from 1998 to 2021 at 4 km resolution. After applying DINEOF, for gap filling, the reflectanes have been corrected for Raman scattering. Chl a was obtained using a regional algorithm to increase the absolute numerical accuracy. One type of validation of gap-filled data was done by examining the mean and deviation values in the entire basin. Secondly, the data has been classified in both time and space. From the spatial classification, a wavelet analysis was performed on the chl a time series extracted from the most representative geographical locations. Finally, temporal classifications have been analyzed in comparison to model-derived oceanographic properties in the basin. All three examinations showed how, despite some smoothing on a day-to-day scale, DINEOF managed to capture oceanographically sound results and managed to reflect the physical processes that drive the distribution of chl a in the entire basin.
