ABSTRACT 991 | POSTER TH-032

VALIDATION OF FIVE ATMOSPHERIC CORRECTION ALGORITHMS APPLIED TO SENTINEL-3-OLCI IMAGES OVER WATER BODIES OF SPAIN, BRAZIL AND CHILE

Traditional atmospheric correction (AC) algorithms for water bodies, based on oceanic waters, assumed reflectance values close to zero in the NIR region. The presence of different optically active components (OACs), such as solid suspend matter (SS), increases the reflectance values in the NIR region in complex inland waters, making it challenging to apply an adequate AC algorithm. This difficulty arises also due to the possible small size and/or irregular shape of reservoirs when working with sensors developed for water applications, given their low spatial resolution. In this study, Remote Sensing Reflectance (Rrs) from S3-OLCI images corrected using five AC algorithms developed for application in water bodies (C2RCC, ACOLITE, Polymer, iCOR and Level-2-WFR OLCI product) were validated with in-situ Rrs data, collected during several field campaigns conducted in 16 inland and transitional water bodies with different trophic states of Spain, Brazil and Chile, between 2018 and 2024, using above-water radiometry methodology. A total of 37 Level 1 S3-OLCI and 37 Level 2 S3-WFR free-cloud images coinciding (±1 day) with the dates of the field radiometry measurements, were processed. Also, a quality control check score (QWIP) was applied to in-situ and satellite Rrs data. The resulting dataset, where all AC algorithms had a common match-up, was used for band per band and overall validation to evaluate the performance of each AC algorithm. In addition, the impact of a wrong atmospheric parameters estimation was analyzed. The results underscore the necessity of applying and validating different AC methods in this type of waters.
