ABSTRACT 1067 | POSTER W-035

DETECTING CHANGES IN PLANKTON DIVERSITY IN POLAR REGIONS THROUGH IMPROVED REGIONAL EARTH OBSERVATION CAPACITY

The ability to estimate long-term changes in plankton community composition and their drivers is critical to better understand ecosystem functioning and predict the direction of future change and its impact on key ecosystem services, fishery production and carbon sequestration. Information derived from models based on satellite data is often used as a tool for mapping changes in phytoplankton dynamics and the key environmental factors driving them. To develop remote sensing algorithms for water quality, including the composition of phytoplankton communities, large amounts of in situ data, such as phytoplankton pigment data are required for calibration and validation. However, there is a lack of published in situ data, and the existing data for Arctic region that can be compared to satellite measurements are very limited due to the high cloud cover in the region. This study examines the value of large-scale historical data on phytoplankton pigments (analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)) collected in the Arctic Ocean from 2000 to 2022. In the analysis, 900 sets of pigment data were used to compare the spatiotemporal variability in the distribution of phytoplankton functional types (PFT) in the Arctic between 2000-2005 and 2014-2022. The integration of numerous new satellite matchups with in situ phytoplankton pigment data will considerably improve our capacity to develop regional satellite PFT algorithms for the Arctic Ocean.
