ATLAS OF BIO-OPTICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SEAS, SURROUNDING THE WESTERN PART OF RUSSIA, ACCORDING TO SATELLITE OCEAN COLOR DATA

Since 2002, the Ocean Optics Laboratory of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been producing electronic atlases of the bio-optical characteristics of the Russian seas, based on data from satellite ocean color scanners (http://optics.ocean.ru). An important feature of these atlases is the use of regional satellite algorithms for obtaining maps of the spatial distributions of bio-optical characteristics, developed and validated on the results of complex long-term bio-optical shipboard measurements performed in the Barents, Kara, White, Baltic, Black and Caspian seas. The use of regional algorithms to determine the values of the bio-optical characteristics of these seas can significantly increase the accuracy compared to standard algorithms. We perform the analysis of the interannual variability of bio-optical characteristics of mentioned seas for the period from 2003 to 2023. Also, we carry out estimates of its regional trends in the temporal variability. For example, a significant positive trend in the concentration of coccolithophores in the northeastern part of the Black Sea was revealed, confirming the intensification of coccolithophore blooms observed from the data of field measurements. The positive trend in the variability of chlorophyll concentration in the northern part of the Barents Sea, obtained using the regional algorithm, is apparently associated with a decrease in ice coverage. The possibility of using PACE hyperspectral data to expand the Atlas with information on the species composition of phytoplankton is discussed.
