INTERNATIONAL EFFORTS TO PROMOTE OCEANIC PROFILING LIDAR

An International Team (IT) was established in May 2022 at the International Space Sciences Institute (ISSI) to discuss the potential of oceanic profiling lidar and the bottlenecks that need to be solved. The IT gathers specialists of ocean color, instrumentation and lidar algorithms from the atmospheric community. The objective of the IT is to provide the current state of lidar applications to ocean color, with a focus of the future space-borne mission CALIGOLA developed by the Italian Space Agency with NASA. The work of the IT focuses on three parts: 1) Review of oceanic lidar algorithms, 2) Construction of a glossary to connect the ocean color and the atmospheric communities, improving lidar literacy, and 3) Development of a network of automatic oceanic lidar observations with an emphasize on lidar Instrumentation. We will showcase the advances on those three topics. Finally, a FORUM will be organized in May 2025 on the development of a network of in situ lidar observations needed to provide context for spaceborne measurements.
