ABSTRACT 848 | POSTER TH-060

A COMPILATION OF SURFACE INHERENT OPTICAL PROPERTIES AND PHYTOPLANKTON PIGMENT CONCENTRATIONS FROM THE ATLANTIC MERIDIONAL TRANSECT

In-situ measurements of particulate inherent optical properties (IOPs) are crucial for the development of satellite ocean color algorithms that retrieve biogeochemical quantities such as Chlorophyll-a, dissolved organic matter (DOC), and total suspended matter (TSM). Here, we present a compilation of particulate absorption-attenuation spectrophotometric data and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) phytoplankton pigment concentrations measured underway on nine Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) cruises between the UK and South America from 2009-2019. The IOP data are processed using a consistent methodology which includes propagated uncertainties for each IOP variable, application of a consistent set of quality-control filters, and derivation of Total Chlorophyll-a (TChl-a) from the particulate absorption data. The total dataset consists of over 310,000 measurements at a 1-minute binning (270,000 hyperspectral) and > 700 co-incident HPLC pigment surface samples, approximately 600 of which are coincident with hyperspectral IOP data. We present geographic variation in the particulate IOPs, HPLC pigments and derived TChl-a transects across the biogeochemical provinces sampled by the cruises. We then investigate pigment correlation structure, and optical signatures associated with changes in the pigment package effect. Changes in absorption spectra are analyzed as a function of the dominant phytoplankton pigment, providing information for the development of algorithms for dominant phytoplankton groups using hyperspectral data. The compiled dataset will be useful to a range of research communities working on ocean optics, remote-sensing, marine ecology, and biogeochemical modeling.
