SUBMESOSCALE OCEAN DYNAMICS EXPERIMENT (S-MODE): TOWARDS IMPROVED AQUATIC BIOGEOCHEMICAL RETRIEVALS

Submesocale eddies and fronts contribute to vertical exchange of climate and biological variables. Global simulations indicate that the net effect of submesoscale processes on ocean-heat exchange is likely larger than the greenhouse effect. However, our ability to simulate these processes has surpassed our ability to observe them. Thus, the Submesocale Ocean Dynamics Experiment (S-MODE) collected in situ and aircraft data to test the hypothesis that submesoscale features make important contributions to vertical exchange in the upper ocean. The Portable Remote Imaging Spectrometer (PRISM), was mounted on NASA’s G-III aircraft for two airborne campaigns in October 2022 and April 2023 to provide airborne biogeochemical information. Future work comparing PRISM data with other S-MODE assets will improve our understanding of submesoscale processes on vertical exchange in the upper ocean.
