ABSTRACT 925 | POSTER T-080

VALIDATION OF SATELLITE-BASED BIOGEOCHEMICAL PRODUCTS ALONG EUROPEAN COASTAL WATERS THROUGH THE UTILIZATION OF THE HYPERBOOST (TARA EUROPA) BIO-OPTICAL DATASET

The role of in-situ bio-optical datasets in assessing the uncertainties of satellite ocean color measurements and derived products cannot be overstated. This is particularly crucial in coastal waters, where land adjacency, bottom reflectance effects, and optical water complexity can significantly affect the satellite’s signal. Therefore, collecting relevant in-situ data is of utmost importance for existing and upcoming hyperspectral missions and updating our knowledge of optical properties. The Bio-Optical Observations Sailing on Tara (HyperBOOST) project, funded by the ESA and part of the Tara Europa expedition, is set to gather bio-optical and biogeochemical data across European coastal waters from April 2023 to August 2024, offering a unique research opportunity. The data collected include inline inherent optical properties, hyperspectral above-water radiometry, as well as laboratory characterization of the particulate and dissolved materials with samples collected over 200 stations. It expands the pioneering work of Babin et al. in both spatial coverage and parameters measured. In this work, we assessed the performance of several satellite products in coastal systems, including the standard products by the space agencies and the Copernicus Marine Service regional datasets. The matchup analysis of satellites and in-situ biogeochemical products was based on quality-controlled data collected during the HyperBOOST project. With its comprehensive temporal and spatial coverage (spanning Atlantic, Baltic, and Mediterranean coasts), the dataset is useful for both present and future satellite ocean color missions.
