ABSTRACT 775 | POSTER M-081

Monitoring water quality in the Mekong Delta using high spatial resolution satellite observations (Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8-9)

The measurement of water quality parameters such as suspended particulate matter, chlorophyll-a concentration or sea surface temperature, is a key factor of water management. With 21 million inhabitants, the Mekong delta presents a significant challenge for water management as it is directly confronted to natural and anthropogenic forcings and its consequences from dam construction to pollution or global warming, bringing changes that still need to be understood. The main objective of this study is to improve our understanding of the spatial and temporal changes of water quality in the Mekong Delta including its upstream tributaries. This study involves several successive steps for the estimation of the water quality parameters from high spatial resolution sensors (MSI on Sentinel-2 and OLI on Landsat-8/9) between 2015 and 2024. First, the systematic identification of water pixels without sunglint, and shadowing effects from clouds using the WiPE methodology, and second the applications of atmospheric correction (Polymer and C2RCC) to negate atmosphere influence on studied images. Time series is studied (X11, EOF/DinEOF) on identified areas of interest in order to evaluate trend and seasonal patterns on water quality changes over time. Results obtained is compared with data coming from both medium scale sensors observations (Sentinel-3 OLCI) and Copernicus model products in order to observe the impact of the identified modifications at the river outlet and difference between high and moderate resolutions sensors.
