ESTIMATES OF THE DISSOLVED ORGANIC CARBON CONCENTRATION FROM REMOTE SENSING IN THE FRAME OF THE OCROC PROJECT

Accurate monitoring of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) from space is crucial for tracking and validating carbon stocks and fluctuations in coastal and open ocean waters. Within the OCROC project framework from the Copernicus marine service RetD project, we improved the recent Ocean and Land Color Instrument’s (OLCI) DOC algorithm, designed to accommodate data from historical and current ocean color sensors. The original algorithm utilizes four key input parameters: absorption coefficient of Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (acdom), chlorophyll-a concentration, Sea Surface Temperature (SST), and Mixed Layer Depth (MLD) at varying time lags to accounts for the water mass history. The new version of the algorithm incorporates two refined Artificial Neural Network algorithms, combines a dedicated approach for coastal waters impacted by terrestrial inputs, and utilizes the SST and MLD data provided by Copernicus, besides ocean color data. Based on a large match-up dataset, the new algorithm improved the Mean Absolute Percentage Difference (MAPD) value from 14.61% to 12.52% and the bias from 1.26 to 0.96 µmol/L. In subsequent phases, we will explore the feasibility of applying this algorithm to other ocean color missions such as MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). This endeavor necessitates the replacement of wavelengths to accurately estimate acdom, a process that requires further refinement and approval. DOC products between 1997 and 2022 will be made available through a specific section (intitled oceanic carbon demonstration products) of the web site (https://boc.acri.fr/) for evaluation and feedbacks by the community.
