OLA: An oceanic lidar simulator

Oceanic lidar is a highly effective tool for detecting the vertical structure of water bodies. Designing cost-effective oceanic lidar systems and processing algorithms necessitates a robust lidar simulator. In this study, we introduce a novel oceanic lidar simulation tool named the OLA. The OLA is an enhanced semi-analytic, polarized Monte Carlo-based lidar simulator capable of accurately modeling the physics of light as it propagates through a wind-driven, rough air-water interface, scatters off subsurface phytoplankton, reflects from the sea bottom, and returns to the lidar receiver. Our method comprehensively considers the coupled effects of environmental parameters and the observation geometry of the lidar system on the received signals. Our research delves into the impact of multiple scattering on the time-resolved polarization state of lasers under various environmental conditions, including complex stratified structures, scattering phase functions, and particle size distribution in seawater. Additionally, we examine different lidar observation conditions, such as transmitter height, incident angle, field of view (FOV), and receiver detection area. Our findings indicate that multiple scattering significantly depolarizes the backscatter return from seawater particulate matter. We have pioneered a quantitative correlation between oceanic lidar multiple scattering and the depolarization ratio. These results demonstrate the efficacy of our model for oceanic lidar simulation.
