SYNERGY OF ACTIVE LIF LIDAR AND PASSIVE SATELLITE SENSING FOR WATER QUALITY MONITORING OF COASTAL AND INLAND WATERS

Environmental monitoring of coastal and inland waters using satellite ocean color data is a rapidly developing trend in modern oceanology and limnology. Today it involves big in situ datasets and machine learning. At the same time, while methods and technical solutions for hyperspectral measurements have developed actively over the past decade, synchronous registration of bio-optical parameters has not. Fluorescent sensing technology, widely used in fluorometers, opens up significantly greater possibilities when implemented based on powerful laser radiation penetrating a significant depth in the water column, i.e. in marine Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) LiDARs. Today, this narrow class of high-tech and expensive devices is tailored to oil contamination detection. However, a modern element base and proven know-how make it possible to expand the functionality and robustness of LIF LiDARs, simplify their design, and reduce cost. They are getting a promising tool for in situ non-invasive remote measurement of key bio-optical characteristics of the water upper layer (Chl-a, CDOM, TSM) and surface and subsurface organic contaminants (oil slick, oil-in-water emulsion, and marine litter detection) with highest spatial resolution. In this report, we examine the benefits of the synergy of active lidar sensing and passive multi-resolution satellite imagery to create regional bio-optical models for retrieving water quality parameters of various water types for marine and freshwater bodies. Attention is paid to methodological issues, such as the influence of sunlight, water surface condition, vertical stratification, laser penetration depth, and ship pitching, as well as the analysis of existing uncertainties and error metrics.
