ABSTRACT 1048 | POSTER T-106

DAILY PHOTOSYNTHETICALLY ACTIVE RADIATION FOR S3 OLCI OCEAN COLOR

During the PAR4OLCI project supported by EUMETSAT, an operational daily PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) product for the Sentinel3/OLCI sensor was developed and optimized. The OLCI daily PAR will contribute to the long-term time series of surface radiation products generated from SeaWiFS, MERIS, MODIS-T, MODIS-A, VIIRS-NPP, VIIRS-JPSS1, SGLI, EPIC, and PACE/OCI data. The algorithm is generic, therefore easily adaptable to other sensors, in particular those on geostationary orbits (like MTG) and works for cloudy and clear sky conditions. The level 2 product includes variables useful to address science questions pertaining to biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nutrients, and oxygen as well as mixed-layer dynamics and circulation: daily-averaged downward planar PAR just above and just below the ice-free surface, scalar PAR for total light just below the ice-free surface. Statistical uncertainties are associated to each product on a pixel-by-pixel basis based on theoretical radiative transfer computations and usage of multiyear meteorological reanalysis datasets. Some challenges and optimizations have been addressed at the level 3 like (i) tentative derivation of sub-ice PAR and absorbed fraction of PAR by live algae (APAR) (ii) PAR above sun glint contaminated area, turbid waters, and for very high solar zenith angles, and (iii) diurnal variation of the cloud cover. Validations against global daily PAR products derived from LEO and GEO sensors and in situ measurements will be presented.
