OPTICAL FEATURES OF PHYTOPLANKTON CLASSES IN COMPLEX INLAND WATERS RETRIEVED FROM SIMULATED AND IN SITU REMOTE SENSING REFLECTANCE SPECTRA
The retrieval of the relative abundances of phytoplankton taxonomic classes in lakes, from water leaving remote sensing reflectance (Rrs), is an unachieved goal so far. The optical complexity of inland waters and the lack of sufficient in situ data are the two main limiting factors. A phytoplankton-based optical model (PHYBOM) coupled to the radiative transfer code EcoLight, was used to simulate a large database of Rrs spectra (N=51840), covering a wide range of pigment concentrations ([Chl-a] from 0.1 to 512 mg m-3), cell sizes and taxonomic classes, together with non-covariant Non-Algal Particles concentrations ([NAP] from 0 to 204.8 g m-3) and CDOM absorption (0 to 6.4 m-1 at 400 nm). The spectra of the phytoplankton-dominated waters were used to develop a classification algorithm combining the position, magnitude and shape of the green and NIR reflectance maximums and the 600-650 nm trough. Its performance was assessed in the entire database and in a set of in situ data (N=80) from Spanish lakes and reservoirs. The applicability to satellite hyperspectral data was analyzed in the view of the spectral resolution, SNR and L2 reflectance accuracy and precision of current (PRISMA, EnMAP, DESIS) and incoming missions (CHEES, FLEX).
