Variability of Angular Scattering Associated with Submicron Particles in Seawater
Understanding the fractional contribution of particles of different sizes to scattering is crucial for interpreting the remote sensed reflectance, yet the measurements are scarce. We measured the size-fractionated volume scattering functions (VSFs) using a LISST-VSF at four diverse locations: Station Papa in the North Pacific Ocean (NP), an eddy in the North Atlantic Ocean (NA), Mississippi coastal waters in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (MS), and the Bioluminescent Bay in Puerto Rico (PR). Measurements included VSFs for bulk particles and those filtered through <0.2 um at all locations, with additional size fractions of <0.7 um in NP, <0.8 um in NA, <0.5 um and <5 um in MS, and <1.2 um and <5 um PR. We observed that the contribution from submicron particles generally increased with scattering angle and varied by location. Specifically, in the backward directions, contributions could reach up to 60% in NP and NA (<0.7/<0.8 um), averaging around 23% in PR (<1.2 um), and below 9% in MS (<0.5 um). Meanwhile, the average backscattering associated with particles <0.2 um is averaging at 26% in NP, 23% in NA, 7.1% in PR, and 1.2% in MS. The contribution by submicron particles appears to decrease with increasing trophic states or turbidity at these four sites, where chlorophyll-a concentration varied from approximately 0.07 to 28 mg/m³. Analysis of these data to further elucidate the optical effect of submicron particles in different waters is ongoing.
