EXPLORING GIOP PARAMETERIZATIONS FOR PACE OCI DATA

Inherent optical properties (IOPs) describe how light is absorbed and scattered by seawater and are widely used to study dissolved and particulate matter, characterize the underwater light field, and support studies of ocean primary productivity and carbon cycling. The NASA Ocean Biology Distributed Active Archive Center (OB.DAAC) routinely distributes IOP products for the NASA Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission using hyperspectral observations from the Ocean Color Instrument (OCI). Post-launch, these products are derived using the default configuration of the Generalized Inherent Optical Properties algorithm framework (GIOP-DC). GIOP has a modular structure with multiple selectable options including the forward reflectance model, underlying spectral IOP shapes, and the inverse solution method.

GIOP-DC was recommended in 2013 based on sensitivity analyses using NOMAD (in situ) and IOCCG (synthetic) datasets. In the intervening time, new GIOP options have been added, and the framework currently supports nearly 3000 unique GIOP model parameterizations. The large number of possible parameterizations complicates operational configuration selection and motivates the need for systematic evaluation. In this study, we seek to recommend a GIOP parameterization for OCI data products. For this exercise, we conduct a systematic intercomparison of various GIOP candidate parameterizations. We evaluate the skill of each candidate using simulated data together with in situ PACE validation datasets spanning a range of optical conditions. Comparative results from this effort are presented alongside a recommendation for a “PACE configuration” (GIOP-PC). GIOP-PC may serve as a benchmark for comparison with novel IOP algorithms being developed by the research community.
