THOMAS: OPTIMISED DATA ACCESS AND MATCHUP WORKFLOWS FOR MULTI-SENSOR VALIDATION OF SATELLITE OCEAN COLOUR PRODUCTS
Matching up spaceborne and in situ reference measurements to perform validation of satellite Aquatic Optical products comes with a series of intricacies: how comparable are in situ and satellite data spectrally and bi-directionally? Additionally – accounting for the highly dynamic oceanographic phenomena dominating the Ocean Colour signal – how well collocated is our in situ reference measurement spatially and temporally with the “matched” spaceborne acquisition?
In addition to uncertainties over both in situ and satellite measurands, comparability and representativity are also key elements to assess the uncertainty of our match-up exercise. In this regard, the OC community has established a series of measurement protocols, guidelines and procedures as well as match-up protocols (including EUMETSAT’s Match-up Protocol) to foster and standardise best common practices when performing such assessments.
EUMETSAT’s goal with ThoMaS (Tool to generate Matchups of OC products with Sentinel-3/OLCI) is to translate all these documented recommendations into a tool that ensures their proper application and at the same time facilitating satellite data access – for instance, ThoMaS has EUETSAT’s eumdac and NASA’s earthaccess embedded APIs into its routines. While originally developed to support the standard suite of EUMETSAT Sentinel-3 OLCI products, ThoMaS has since been expanded to support a broader range of sensors and processors, including NASA’s hyperspectral PACE mission.
