APPLICATIONS OF GOCI-II L3 DATA FOR ANALYZING OCEAN COLOR VARIABILITY ACROSS MULTIPLE TIMESCALES

Ocean color observations from polar-orbiting satellites have improved our understanding of marine ecosystems, but their limited revisit frequency makes it difficult to resolve sub-daily variability. This remains a key limitation because phytoplankton-related signals change over a broad range of timescales, from hours to years. GOCI-II provides a rare opportunity to repeatedly observe the same region within a day and to examine ocean color variability from diurnal to interannual timescales. Hourly, daily, and monthly chlorophyll-a data from GOCI-II collected between 2022 and 2026 are used to investigate variability across these timescales. The analysis highlights the value of geostationary ocean color observations for characterizing temporal variability that is difficult to capture with conventional polar-orbiting sensors and for improving our understanding of phytoplankton variability across multiple timescales.
