SYSTEM VICARIOUS CALIBRATION OF THE OCEAN COLOR INSTRUMENT ON THE NASA PACE SATELLITE: RESULTS AND METHODOLOGY
The on-orbit calibration of a spaceborne ocean color radiometer is defined as a system calibration, where the system is comprised of both the instrument and the atmospheric correction algorithm used to derive the water leaving signal. Following the launch of the PACE satellite in February 2024, the Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) has provided the global Ocean Color community and beyond with new and improved earth science data products. The system vicarious calibration (SVC) process has been utilized and refined to enhance data quality and allow for improved OCI validation activities. The primary objective of SVC efforts is to derive gain factors that have been used to adjust the sensor-algorithm system to increase alignment of data with in situ observations. The buoy data used in this SVC process for PACE OCI have been provided by two independent systems and teams: 1) HyperNav and 2) MarONet/MOBY-Refresh. We will describe the methodology that has been developed and refined since the launch of PACE, including the determination of mission-average gains and match-up criteria. Results of in situ/satellite match up data to-date will be shared, including a multi-site analysis framework. Future work and next steps will be described as we continue to refine the process and better understand site-to-site variability.
