MODELING GLIMR’S ON-ORBIT RADIOMETRIC PERFORMANCE AND MAPPING THE SEASONAL IMAGERY ACQUISITION SCHEDULE

The Geostationary Littoral Imaging and Monitoring Radiometer (GLIMR) Hyperspectral Imager (HSI) is nearing build completion and scheduled for launch by 2028. Throughout its development, design-specific estimates of HSI’s signal to noise ratio and systematic uncertainty were used to model on-orbit radiometric performance. This modeling evaluates the retrieval of hyperspectral sea-surface reflectance to ensure compliance with stringent mission requirements. GLIMR is designed to achieve uncertainties in ocean color product retrievals comparable to NASA’s PACE OCI mission, but from a 35,786 km altitude geostationary orbit. Here, we present the methods and results of these radiometric performance models. Additionally, we detail the seasonally dependent “day in the life” (DITL) schedule. This schedule enables imaging of U.S. coastal regions multiple times per day, while maintaining the flexibility to capture dynamic targets of opportunity throughout the visible hemisphere, including macroalgae mats, harmful algal blooms, and severe flood events impacting critical coastal ecosystems. Preliminary model results and sensitivity analyses predict that HSI radiometric performance complies with mission requirements for uncertainties in hyperspectral water-leaving reflectance across the UV-VIS-NIR spectrum. In addition, DITL optimization has demonstrated that HSI will meet or exceed all mission requirements for obtaining high-frequency coverage in select coastal U.S. regions for resolving diurnal variability with opportunities remaining throughout the day for imaging dynamic oceanographic events.
