MULTIWAVELENGTH HIGH SPECTRAL RESOLUTION LIDAR FOR MEASURING OCEAN OPTICAL PROPERTIES

Lidar is emerging as an important complement to ocean color remote sensing as it overcomes several limitations of passive measurements. For instance, lidar can provide three-dimensional measurements of upper-ocean optical properties during both day and night, offering insight into subsurface and nighttime ecosystem processes beyond the capabilities of passive sensors. The active nature of lidar also permits more direct, independent measurements of ocean and atmosphere optical properties making it useful for validating assumptions in ocean color retrievals.

High spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) is an advanced implementation of the lidar technique that permits accurate and independent profiling of backscatter and attenuation. NASA pioneered the use of HSRL for ocean profiling with the airborne HSRL-1 instrument and demonstrated the utility of these measurements during the SABOR and NAAMES campaigns. Since then, upgrades to the airborne HSRL-2 instrument have been made to facilitate multi-wavelength HSRL measurements in the ocean at 355 and 532 nm as well as measurements of laser-induced fluorescence and Raman scattering. Although HSRL-2 has not yet flown on an ocean-focused mission, we collected ocean measurements during several atmosphere-focused missions, the 2024 PACE Post-launch Airborne eXperiment (PACE-PAX) and the 2025 Nighttime Bermuda Lidar Underflights of EarthCARE (NightBLUE) campaign, allowing us to perform an initial assessment of these new capabilities. Comparisons against satellite ocean color retrievals and in situ measurements from an autonomous ocean glider show broadscale agreement but reveal a bias in ocean color retrievals of particulate backscatter toward the low-end of the dynamic range.
